From the Founders: One Way Garrett Actively Reads
You should take something new away from every time you read. Confucius said, “If I raise one corner for someone and he cannot come back with the other three, I do not go on.”
A book is no different, but you must slow down to see the full picture. You can easily find the knowledge you’re meant to hold, but how about the bit you’re supposed to use? For me, it helps to pause at moments after or during a read, to think a bit harder - do I agree with the author or what they portrayed? Where did they come from? Can I understand it in terms of my own life? What does it look like to carry this with me into the next time I act? And, how does the style affect the story? Living requires reflection and application; reading offers insight into a broader way to think.
